According to an official publication written by Burgdorf, Fe is in development and was originally intended to be an alternative to Vyper. As development went on, the syntax of both languages began to separate and the team decided to create a new language instead. The publication also highlights Fe as a response to issues raised by Consensys:
Fe still has similar characteristics with Vyper, including a focus on language safety and a very easy syntax as is obtainable with Python. Developers familiar with Python will also find Fe easy to understand and use.
